CASE OPTIONS

Travelling Frame

Constructed of 25mm, 100mm or 150mm pine with 9mm ply comers, a travelling frame is suitable for transporting by truck.

It provides protection to corners and sides of the painting’s frame. The addition of a central strut provides extra rigidity for larger paintings.

Tri-wall inner case

Constructed of 25mm x 75mm, 100mm or 150mm pine with 18mm tri-wall lid and base, a tri-wall case is suitable for transporting by truck, in sea containers or for low value air freight.

Used in conjunction with an outer packing case it provides a high degree of protection.

Base Packing Case

Constructed of 9mm or 18mm plywood reinforced with wooden battens.

The basic case provides substantial protection and is suitable for transporting by land, sea or air.

Inner option No1

All inner surfaces of the packing case are covered with 5cm thick polyester urethane foam providing improved protection from shock and vibration.

Polyester urethane foam is a very good insulating material providing both thermal and shock protection.

Inner option No2

All inner surfaces of the packing case are covered with 5cm thick polyester urethane foam.

The bottom side of the case can be covered with a second layer of the foam providing improved protection from shock and vibration.

Inner option No3

10cm polyethylene conner pads are used to cushion the painting on all sides and provide berter than 60 Gs shock for a 75cm drop.

Inner option No4

All inner surfaces of the packing case are covered with 5cm thick polyester urethane foam.

Polyester urethane foam is a very good insulating material providing thermal and shock protection.

10cm polyethylene corner pads are adhered to the two large faces of polyester urethane improving the static load on the foam and providing extra protection for the painting.

Inner option No5

Putting a painting in an inner case reduces the risk of abrasion to the frame and provides extra protection in the event of accidental puncture.

It improves temperature "half time" and by increasing the thickness of the insulating material will reduce the heat flow rate in direct proportion to the thickness increase.

If a painting has an elaborate frame and the edges are too delicate to be placed directly against cushioning materials, the backboard of the inner case can be replaced with plywood and the painting screwed to it with mounting plates.

ARTWORK WRAPPING OPTIONS

The advantages of wrapping paintings in kraft paper

The kraft paper we use is 5ply and provides a reasonably firm protection during handling and transportation.

There is a small risk of condensation as kraft paper is slightly absorbent.

The advantages of wrapping paintings in glassine

Glassine is a smooth material which reduces the possibility of abrasion during transit and handling.

It is translucent making the painting slightly visible.

There is a small risk of condensation as glassine is slightly absorbent.

The advantages of polyethylene

Polythene is waterproof, smooth and transparent. An item wrapped in polythene will maintain the relative humidity in which it has been stored or exhibited reducing the risk of a change in the water content of the item due to outside fluctuations in temperature.

The moisture contained in a typical painting, particularly one that is in a wooden frame, can easily be a thousand times greater than the water in the surrounding air.

The advantages of wrapping paintings in kraft paper covered by polyethylene

Polythene is waterproof, smooth and transparent. An item wrapped in polythene will maintain the relative humidity in which it has been stored or exhibited reducing the risk of a change in the water content of the item due to outside fluctuations in temperature.

The addition of 5ply kraft paper provides further firm protection and cushioning during handling and transportation.

The advantages of placing paintings in an inner packing case

An inner packing case provides substantial protection against the possibility of abrasion to the picture frame and further protection from damage.

The case encloses a quantity of air around the painting establishing a relative humidity in the enclosed air that is appropriate for the painting and protecting the contents from damage due to outside changes in temperature.

If the inner packing case is wrapped in polyethylene the package will be waterproof.

The advantages of placing silica gel in the packing case

Silica gel provides protection from the possibility of damage caused by the change in relative humidity of the contents of a packing case by stabilising the moistre content of such materials as wood, paper, parchment and ivory. This prevents the item from swelling and contracting thus causing damage when moving it from a dry climate to a wet one and vice versa.

Silica gel is very efficient because, for its weight, it contains a higher proportion of water than other materials and can readily absorb or desorb large amounts of water in the event of relative humidity fluctuations in the surrounding air.

THE ADVANTAGES OF WRAPPING PAINTINGS IN KRAFT PAPER

The kraft paper we use is 5ply and provides a reasonably firm protection during handling and transportation.

There is a small risk of condensation as kraft paper is slightly absorbent

SINGLE/TRIWALL CARD

The single/triwall card we use is 1 and/or 3ply and provides a reasonably tim protection during handling and transport. I addition to Kraft paper this packaging suitable for containerised exports.

There is a small risk of condensation as card is slightly absorbent.

BUBBLEWRAP

The bubble wrap we use provides cushion protection during handling and transport.

In addition to tissue paper and card this packaging is suitable for containerised exports.

There is little risk of condensation as bubble wraps non-absorbent.

TISSUE PAPER/NEWSPRINT

The tissue paper & newsprint we use is acid proof and provides cushion protection during handling and transportation.

There is a small risk of condensation as tissue paper is slightly absorbent.

PLASTIC FURNITURE COVERS

There is reduced risk of condensation/water damage as plastic is non absorbent.

SOFT TYVEK®

Soft Tyvek® is a non-abrasive, gas permeable, non-dusting, water resistant, inert material that is excellent for lining cavities and covering foam pads.

This is an expensive material that offers some advantages over other lining materials. It is non-woven, and does not have exposed fibers that can easily catch on fragile surfaces. Its durability allows it to be used against heavy items that may pitch or slide against its surface. There are some limitations in that its texture is not suitable for all surfaces.

Best used on highly lacquered items.

TYPES OF CRATE

ONE-WAY CRATES

  • Suited for economical one-way transport and short-term storage
  • Extra thick battens placed only at corners ensure sturdy construction and reduce shipping volume overall
  • Strong enough for international transport

TWO-WAY CRATES

  • Shell constructed of battened ACX
  • Interior packing can be equal in quality to a travel crate or scaled back as safety of the object and budget permit
  • Exterior fit and finish upgrades such as bolt closures are also available for these crates

TRAVEL / MUSEUM CRATES

  • Suited for extended traveling shows, high-end artworks, long-term storage, or where inclement weather is a factor
